Retreat in Punta de Lobos, Chile

The site chosen for this house is located in the highest part of a set of hills that look out over the sea of Punta de Lobos. The Landscape is dominated by vast green meadows with the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop.

The house is located on a 34×31 site, exposed to the south winds and with a steep slope, in a condominium with a height restriction of only 1 floor above the natural ground. The challenge resulted in building a 174m2 house on a single floor that would guarantee panoramic views to the south and at the same time protect its inhabitants from the prevailing winds of the area.

The solution found was to develop a house with a compact and staggered plant, topped by a large upper plane as a roof, which accompanies the natural slope of the land to minimize the visual impact on the environment. The house is actually two independent houses linked by a strip of circulation and services, allowing the owners to have more flexibility of use. Finally, the house has a circulation on the south façade, where the walls are prevented from reaching the glass on the façade, turning this sector into a true internal gallery that allows the space to be transformed into an authentic viewpoint that amplifies the perception of the landscape from inside.

The site chosen for this home sits on top of a set of hills that look at the sea of Punta de Lobos. The landscape is dominated by extensive green fields with the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop.

The house was to be located on a site with a north-south orientation. The challenge, therefore, was to design a house that would exploit to the maximum the wonderful views that the site offered towards Cahuil, located to the south and at the same time take advantage of all the sun that received the opposite face facing north.

For this, it was decided to build a large 114 m2 covered platform with an elongated floor plan that allowed all the spaces in the house to have two facades, one facing the sun from the north and the other facing the views from the south. This layout, together with the design of windows that allow 100% opening, make it possible for nature to invade the interior of the house, allowing inhabitants to participate in the beauty of the place through a construction dedicated to celebrating nature.

Retreat in Arboretum Lussich, Maldonado, Uruguay

The house is located on a site next to the Lussich Arboretum, one of the artificial tree reserves with the greatest diversity of imported species in the world, in an area that favors the growth of native and exotic forests.

These characteristics were what led our clients, a nature-loving couple, to buy a 3,200 m2 site of very dense forest to build a rest house. The premise was built without altering the existing forest, a cabin that allowed them to contemplate nature and the same time participate in it.

The challenge was to accommodate a 105 m2 house in a tree-populated area, avoiding logging and maintaining the original characteristics of the land at the same time.

The site was studied, all existing trees were replanted and it was concluded that the most appropriate response was a house on two levels to reduce the floor ground area and build it in a prefabricated way, to lower the impact of the work on the property. The result was a very compact house that incorporates trees into the exterior spaces of the house, with a double height window that transforms into a large living picture of the forest.

Industrial facility, Montevideo, Uruguay

The building arises from the need to concentrate the facilities dedicated to the maintenance of the company’s machinery that were distributed in different sectors of the industrial plant. At the same time, there was a need to drastically decrease the area for these activities. The area used so far was 6900 m2 and the new building should cover 3200 m2 maximum.

The chosen site was located on one of the fronts of the industrial park of the company, which had evolved in a very haphazard way and had a messy image to the public road.

The solution was to develop a building with a sober and elegant facade incorporating the institutional image of the company to bring order and unity to the northern facade of the industrial park. To lower the useful area dedicated to maintenance, it was necessary to thoroughly study the functioning of the workshop and work with operators to find ways to optimize the use of space. The result: savings equivalent to 45% of area and a new building that qualified public space and improved the quality of the work environment in the company.
